Competition Athletic Surfaces builds running tracks throughout the Southeast for schools, businesses, community centers and military bases.
"Running is one of the most popular sports and forms of exercise in the U.S.," says CAS owner Lee Murray. "We install tracks for running, walking and jogging that help people live healthier, longer lives. Our tracks are also built to help athletes prepare for sports events."
The CAS running track court installation at Spring Valley High School in South Carolina clinched the school's bid to host the top track event in the state.
"We installed a Rekortan polyurethane surface," Murray says. "You can run lightning-fast on it, it's durable, and it's attractive, as well."
At Knoxville Catholic High in Tennessee CAS completed a rare two-color job, transforming an old black track into a handsome green and gold surface that was the talk of the campus for days.
Other CAS running track court sites include Harrell Playground, a New Orleans public recreation facility; Fort Benning, GA, where CAS laced the military post with eight tracks; and the rooftop of Unum, the country's largest disability insurer, at its downtown Chattanooga headquarters.
The 1/7 mile Unum project presented challenges that illustrate the company's resourcefulness.
"There was no way we could bring our equipment to the roof through the building," Murray says. "So we had to dismantle our rig, hoist it up to the roof, then reassmble it. We typically have our compressor and pump for spraying the surfacing material sitting in the bed of a truck. Since we couldn't have a truck on the roof, our guys figured out how to put the equipment on dollies. They created a system that would get the job done."
Competition Athletic Surfaces offers the full range of resilient track court surfaces – basic latex track surfaces and Spurtan and Rekortan polyurethane track surfaces.
Every CAS running track installation contains a percentage of recycled automobile tire rubber. Over the course of a year this environmentally-friendly measure prevents thousands of old tires from piling up in landfills.
Besides entirely new running track court installations, CAS can resurface running track court surfaces, repair running track court surfaces, provide solutions to drainage problems, assist with upgrades to field events facilities or add lanes to existing track surfaces.
